Catcher Connections
There are many connections throughout this story. One of the connections that stands out is when Muriel shows the readers she has a lot of money. She does this by “With her little lacquer brush, while the phone was ringing, she went over the nail of the little finger, accentuating the line of the moon” (Salinger 3). This quote shows that Muriel has to make herself look appealing to people. Unlike Ackley, he doesn't care about his appearance, he just doesn't care what people think of him or how people judge him. He is the complete opposite of Muriel because he doesn’t have to prove anything to anyone. He has his own personality and no one can make him change that about himself
Also, Muriel doesn’t care that Seymour is laying on the beach by himself. She only cares about looking good for other men, not even thinking about what Seymour is doing. An example of this is when Muriel is talking to her mother and the mom says “On the beach? By himself? Does he behave himself on the beach?”. Muriel responds by saying “Mother, said the girl, you talk as though he were a raving maniac” (Salinger 9). This quote describes how Muriel doesn’t care about what Seymour is doing. She is only focused on her clothes and her personal styles.
